An air Zimbabwe Boeing 767-200 known as Victoria Falls was impounded at London's Gatwick International Airport on Monday after not paying its debts to American General Supplies, The Zimbabwean reports.
According to the article: "American General Suppliers secured a court injunction in the US that gave them the power to impound the aircraft over US$ 1, 2 million debts, according to a source on Monday."
This incident follows shortly after the seizure of one of the airline's smaller aircraft last week by South African company Bid Air Services two weeks ago over $500 000 ground handling services.
The Global Post reports that the airline is scrambling to gather the funds, because it is losing more money by having an aircraft out of service.
Air Zimbabwe was once considered one of Africa's best airlines, but has seen a steady decline as successive years of mismanagement and lack of funding have had a crippling effect.

I read they have paid quickly. After all it is the President and First Lady's taxi to take them to daughter's graduations, medical checkups and shopping junkets in the Far East. The money is there in Zim just concentrated in the hands of the corrupt few and only released when they feel their conveniences are threatened as proven in this case. We are told we do not have funds for hospitals and education or even feeding the people but at the drop of a hat we raise millions to have the plane. Real twisted priorities. |

For 1999/2000 holiday, we booked what in all probability was the last Flame Lily holiday with Air Zimbabwe. Their staff here in S.A. and Zimbabwe were efficient and friendly. All the arrangements with hotels, tours and pick-ups went off perfectly. All in al, even today,l its ranked as one of the best holidays we have ever had. It is so sad that that Air Zimbabwe has come to this sorry state. |
