Johannesburg is located on the eastern plateau area of South Africa, known as the Highveld, at an elevation of 1 753m. It is situated in central, south Gauteng. The city of Johannesburg itself is located on a small ridge called the Witwatersrand (White Water's Ridge - Afrikaans) whilst the northern and western suburbs have undulating hills and the eastern metro area is generally flat. The fact that Gauteng is the smallest of the provinces makes it easier for visitors to Johannesburg to experience all the sights and attractions without having to travel very long distances.
