We now have another reason to hope Bafana-Bafana make it beyond the first round as the South African Football Supporters Association (Safsa) is calling upon employers to allow staff to work flexi-time during the World Cup which kicks off on 11 June.

What this essentially means is that all employed South Africans might be granted ex gratia leave that will enable them a rare opportunity to leave their work place three hours prior to all Bafana-Bafana games played during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Dates to diarise - 11/06 16:00 Johannesburg - JSC South Africa - Mexico and 16/06 20:30 Tshwane/Pretoria South Africa - Uruguay

Safsa has tabled the special matter for consideration and possible approval by the Social Partners at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) and the Minister of Public Service and Administration Masenyani Baloyi.

According to Sport24.com, Safsa spokesperson Siyabulela Makhunga said, "This event takes place once every four years. Employers should give people a chance to enjoy. There is going to be a productivity slump during the World Cup in June. “Pre-planned absentees from work are only part of the story. The actual level of absenteeism is likely to be even higher due to post-match celebrations or lack of sleep as fans are likely to stay up until much later to watch the games."

"You cannot help it, the World Cup is here and people will do whatever it takes to have their fair share of the World Cup. As a country we need to work together to ensure that people’s dream is fulfilled" Makunga added.

What utter nonsense, not all people support soccer, not all companies can afford to shut down, for some companies it'll be to costly, what must we do leave policestations, hospitals, firestations, eskom, waterboards unstaffed because of a stupid game, that is economic suicide, start the games after normal working hours and let those working after hours take leave or swap with colleagues, I will not even allow a TV in my company, people get employed to work not watch over-paid wankers running around chasing a stupid ball.

I fully agree that by giving your employees the necessary time off would be appropriate aspropper planning can be made in time. In that way, everybody will benefit!!

i personally think its an excellent idea, it gives people sufficient time to get ready and be at the stadiums in advance, i agree that having the world cup in your country is a once in a life time oppurtunity and everyone should be allowed to get maximum satisfaction from this major event.
