Due to the utter absence of anything resembling national pride emanating from Bafana Bafana in recent months, it is direly important that we unite as a nation to motivate - and hopefully inspire - the team. We cannot afford to present anything less than a united front when sport's biggest showpiece hits our shores this winter. What Shosholoza and Nelson Mandela's number 6 jersey were to the Rugby World Cup in 1995 needs to be replicated in 2010; our first attempt will be via the medium of dance.
It is, therefore, necessary that we learn to celebrate (falsely, or otherwise) together as South Africa supporters, and one of the ways we can achieve this is by learning to do the diski. Personally, I suffer from a severe lack of co-ordination when it comes to any kind of dancing, but I intend to coach my frog-in-a-blender-like flapping limbs into some sort of manageable fashion come June. I may not have mastered the art of any dance-routine more complicated than the hokey-pokey, but I will compensate my gaping lack of talent with enthusiasm.

According to South Africa Tourism the diski is made up of five basic dance moves, the first of which is the Juggle, or Teka. This involves the action of passing an imaginary (thank god) football from your left foot to your right foot and back again. As you can imagine, you will only have one foot on the ground at any one time during these attempts, so make sure you put some cushions on the floor around you the first time you try.
The Header is more self-explanatory - merely make like you are bouncing the ball on your head. It seems easy enough as the imaginary ball lands precisely where your head is, but the diski-creators have added in some kind of sexy hip-swinging movement to complicate it all. You can always do The Funky Chicken to practice (another dance I have mastered).
The Table Mountain is an interestingly named move as one bends over to balance the imaginary (I can't stress this word enough) ball on the back of one's neck while walking backwards. I cannot relate this to the very stationary and ball-free major Capetonian obsession, but nonetheless, it is what it is. Learn it.

A far less complicated manoeuvre is the Trepa which is all about lifting the ball from the back of your neck, over your head and back onto your feet. Once again, as the ball is imaginary, it is quite easy to complete this precise action successfully.
And lastly, the Bridge or Brija is all about passing the non-existant ball from your left foot, over your right, and catching it again the other side. Once again, beware of the dangers of gravity as balancing on one leg while thrashing the other around can be hazardous.
Once you have managed to perfect these moves without breaking any body parts, the real trick is putting them altogether. Your attempt at seamless integration might resemble repelling magnets as the first few attempts don't flow smoothly or simply - quite frankly it is easier to bath a cat.
But try we must, so when those visitors arrive in June we can drown them out with our vuvuzelas and out dance them with the diski. Otherwise we'll have to rely on the usual cop out... put your left foot in, take your left foot out... to the tune of Shosholoza.

Chicken is one of the most versatile foods. It provides approximately over sixty-seven percent of protein in just four ounces and is high in vitamin B including B6 and B3 (niacin) which has been attributed to cancer prevention. |

The full sequence clarified. Remember, though: it's about diski (South African township lingo for "soccer"), so you should feel free to add your own moves, and create your own routines. |

Simon Williamson's description of diski dance and likes is full of fun. Such activities on the scene not only gives moral support to the sports men but also arouses a sense of belonging and oneness among the fellow countrymen. It is very interesting to win the game/sports through dancing! electric heating systems |
The diskiSubmitted by Nerisha on Tue, 05/11/2010 - 12:00. |
I think that the diski is absolutely fabulous and it gives, not only our country but the entire world a chance to come together. I cannot understand why some of our South Africans find it to be crap - how can something so exciting and enjoyable be crappy?? I am trying to get my fellow staff members to learn the diski - is there any way that I can download the instructional video or get the video emailed to me. |

Dancing has always been our nations way of celebrating... it’s part of being South African! This is the way we express ourselves and it’s how we celebrate! I can’t wait to do the DISKI with South Africans and our foreign visitors during the world cup! VIVA DISKI! |

This dance is really inspiring and will be great to display at the games! :) I can’t believe how many pessimists live in South Africa. South Africa is hosting the SWC and it kicks off in 100 days – this is a fact. No matter which country is hosting it, a major event like this does not go without hiccups and problems. Get over all of your SA hang-ups and start supporting the country, or pack your bags and leave. |

Any chance of the SWC organisers putting a free CD or clip on the web to download so that South Africans can practice the diski and blow the foreigners away with our moves?? We got the rhythm, we got the passion. The only thing missing is learning the moves. |

utter crapSubmitted by Tarryn on Thu, 01/21/2010 - 11:17. |
what a load of crap, this is stupid and an embarrassment. then again watching zuma dancing in his leopard skins while getting married for the 5th time to his now 3rd wife was a major embarrassment. It was ridiculed in the foreign press. As a tax paying citizen I feel like with holding my taxes as I refuse to pay for Zuma and his harem! The diski is stupid, don't embarrass the country by insisting on having it displayed to a world wide audience. |

Yes, we should far rather arrive at all the games drunk and stab/beat each other up afterwards like the civilised British or Italians rather than dance. Well said! ALso, we take Brazil seriously and they dance. So what's your actual point? That because black people invented it it's uncivilised? |
Are you serious?Submitted by WHAT? on Thu, 01/21/2010 - 06:57. |
How is the world ever going to take us serious? Get a patriotic song or something, but don't go looking like a bunch of headless chickens. The world is never going to take South Africa serious as long as we continue on in this manner. Our leaders even dance before opening important goverment meetings. The world is laughing behind your backs at you. Start acting like we live in a developed country and maybe we will once again become one. |
