There's more to spas than just deep massages and facials. More and more places are popping up at unexpected locations or coming up with unusual treatments. If you are in Johannesburg and looking for more than the ordinary in your spa choice, read on. We’ve compiled a list of what we think are some of their most unexpected features.
Chilling in Soweto
You don’t have to be in the city to enjoy the goodness of a great spa. In case you didn’t know, Soweto has its very own spa. Roots Health and Beauty first opened in 2002 and has become one of Soweto’s must-visits. It’s owned by Thabang Khubeka, who’s qualified in somatology, iridology (assessing health through the eyes), reflexology, and herbology. Go for a rounded approach to relaxation.
Bush Spa
Safari and spa are mixing more and more these days. Taking time off doesn’t have to be confined to the instant sanctuaries that are city spas. A bush spa offers the whole package. You’re out in the wild with animals, relaxing to the maximum. If you’re a parent, you can even take your kids along and they’ll have other things to do while you relax. Singita spas are worth the visit.
The African Spa
The African Spa is not just for international tourists looking for that illusive ‘African’ experience. Don’t be confused by treatment names like Izimanga, Molala or Neo Maoto, they are all good for you. The ingredients include sesame oil, almond oil, sugar and grape seed oil. There are more treatments with unexpected names, and Mangwanani spas have them all. Go check them out, who knows how great Tlhapiso (full-body cleansing) could be for you.
The Sound of Peace
If you are looking for something really different, try the Tibetan South Therapy offered at The Saxon hotel in Johannesburg. Lie down and listen to the bells, gongs and cymbals that the therapists use to restore the body to its natural order. The buzz is the vibrations heal the body on a cellular level.
Muddy Behaviour
Mud therapies are nothing new to spa regulars. But how many people can say they’ve had mud from the Sterkfontein Caves cake their faces? The Zau Spa, just across the Cullinan dam offers this holy grail of facials. The fact that you can enjoy a massage in the garden scattered with artwork, is just an added bonus.
