It's never a bad idea to take time out and go to a spa. But it's not always possible thanks to our budgets, especially when an average full day at the spa can set you back about R1 500.
There are a few tips to consider if you want to have a good time without feeling the pinch.
Deal or no deal
When thinking of your spa treatments look out for package deals rather than compiling your own list. The deals generally come at a discounted price and will cost you less than the total cost of individual treatments. But, do ask the spa beforehand because some provide discounts when you pick two or more treatments.
Keep your friends closer
Make friends with your favourite spas. If you enjoy a particular spa, ask if they are running any specials later in the year. Also, when you call to arrange your treatment, ask if they have any specials coming up. It's not cheap skate behaviour, it's enterprising.
Gimme gimme gimme
Another thing to remember when you make that call is to find out what else goes with the service you desire. Is there a free hand massage that goes with that facial/back massage treatment? Some facials include Indian head massage, some manicures come with pedicures. Ask, if you don't you may never know.
Take a choir
If you can, arrange spa trips in groups, ten is the usual minimum that warrants a discount. Get your friends, book club members or co-workers and shop around for group specials spa offers. That way you have enjoy a nice time out with friends, while reducing you overall contribution.
Go on a raid
Take advantage of the facilities. If you're there for the whole day, can you take time to go to the sauna, the heated pool or steam room? If you can do it, go ahead and enjoy it. It might be a while before you have exclusive access to a sauna.
Do it on the down low
It's best to visit a spa during off peak periods. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, forget about going to the spa during Christmas, Easter or long weekends. Plan your escapes during the off-peak times. Also, it's better to go during the week rather than during the weekend.
Location, location, location
Consider the area you’re visiting when you go to the spa. It is cheaper to visit spas in the middle of the country. Areas like Cape Town often cater to the international tourist. So unless it would cost more to travel, it's better to consider spas from the interior of the country.
Savvy customers get more
Another important issue if you’re looking to get the most from your money is to polish your spa etiquette. Arrive early so that you can relax your muscles for maximum treatment enjoyment, speak up if you hate the music and don't be afraid to say what you like (within the rules of course) and what you don't like so you get maximum satisfaction.
Be in the know
Sign up for newsletters with spas or with an organisation like the Health Spas Guide. That way you'll know of any specials that come up without having to search for them.
TheHealth Spas Guide has more than 200 spas on their list so their newsletter puts you in a knowledgeable position. And when you call them they'll be able to help you shop around for the most suitable deals.
