Signature Zulu Kingdom golfing

August 18th, 2008
The Zulu Kingdom (KwaZulu-Natal) as its affectionately known, is one of South Africa's colourful regions that has grown in size and stature.
This is an excellent golfing region featuring several outstanding courses in a varied landscape.
Tropical and hot, it is certainly South Africa’s best winter golfing paradise, where the weather retains its warmth without the summer humidity.
Durban, the main centre, has a superb selection of courses, including world-renowned Durban Country Club, while others are spread along the north and south coasts, and inland towards the Drakensberg mountain Range.

Naturally undulating course built in high dunes by the sea, with the holes flowing through dense tropical vegetation. Opening stretch of five holes is as good as any in the world. Flattens out on the back nine, but you return to the rolling terrain for the closing two holes.
Signature Hole: The third is considered one of the best par five’s in the world, played from a high tee to a narrow stretch of fairway, framed by a large, deep bunker that eats into the left side.

Playing at the Wild Coast is a remarkable experience, as this course climbs and descends through ravines and across waterfalls, with breathtaking views of the rugged terrain and the Indian Ocean. Relatively short, and easy to conquer on a calm day, it can be brute in a strong wind. It has some long walks from tee to green, and it is now compulsory to use a cart.
Signature Hole: The Wild Coast has six par 3’s, and the tee shot at the 13th must carry a ravine, with the green partly hidden by bush and rocks.

Undulating seaside course in tropical setting right on the Indian Ocean, although, you unfortunately don’t get many sea views. This is a very tight layout in places that skirts a protected mangrove swamp on the first nine, and ends uniquely with a tough par 3 hole.
Signature Hole: There are many special holes, because of the elevation and tropical bush. The 13th is typical, played from a high tee to narrow chute of a fairway, with a tricky green.

Roller-coaster of a golf course over the hills and through the valleys of a former sugar cane estate next to the Indian Ocean. Its open, rugged appearance gives it almost a links look in places. Has a classic clubhouse.
Signature Hole: The back nine has some good views over the ocean, none more so than at the par-five 15th, where you drive from a high tee to a fairway guarded on the left by tropical bush. The view stretches for miles down the coast.

Champagne Sports Resort
Attractive modern mountain resort close to the Drakensberg Mountain Range, a mixture of South African and Swiss in its character. It’s quite an open layout, but still presents lots of challenges, and is fun for everyone.
Signature Hole: The first is the longest par five in South Africa, 605 metres from a tee that’s higher than the clubhouse, but one of the best holes is the short fourth, from an elevated tee to a green fronted by water.
