Whether you holiday trip happens to find you in Gauteng or the Garden Route, we've got some signature courses for you to try out.

Jozi has a host of golf estates, including one designed by one of South Africa’s favourite son of golf Mr Gary Player.

CCJ Woodmead

Country Club Johannesburg has two courses, the Woodmead and the woodlands. The Woodmead is the older and also the better championship tested. Upgraded in 2001 by Golf Data, it is vastly improved. Built on a large area of land, there is a wonderful feeling of space on every hole.

Signature Hole: The par-four 17th is a superb finishing hole, played from a high tee to a fairway that curves right around a large dam to a rolling green set close to water.

Visitors green fees: Affiliated R380 (week), R445 (weekends); Non Affiliated R445
Cart Fees: R200
Location: Sandton, Gauteng 011-202 1620

Roodepoort CC

The open layout of this course has an almost links-like feel to it. It was also chosen to host the 2003 SA Amateur Championship. One of Gary Player’s first modern designs in Gauteng, the holes feature some challenging greens - which are always in excellent condition.

Signature hole: The 13th is a tempting short par of just over 300 metres from the club trees, and a big drive will get you close to the green. However, water presents a problem down the left side.

Visitors green fees: Affiliated (men) R220 (week), R240 (weekends); Non affiliated (men) R300 (week), R330 (weekends)
Non-affiliated (ladies) R280 (week), R310 (weekends) R310

Cart Fees: R165
Designer: Gary Player (1986)
Location: Roodepoort, Gauteng 011- 908 1204

Kyalami Country Club

This rural country course is in pleasant surroundings close to the famous Kyalami motor racing circuit, north of Sandton.

The course has vastly improved in terms of conditioning and layout in recent years, although it is still maturing in terms of tress and is relatively open off the tee.

It definitely provides an excellent challenge.

Signature Hole: The par-three 3rd is an attractive hole played over water to a narrow green. There are four par fours measuring over 400 metres.

Visitors green fees: Affiliated R225, R130 (Tuesday & Thursday special);
Non-affiliated R350

Cart Fees: R175
Designer: A Tomsett, K de Beer (1955)
Location: Midrand, Gauteng 011-468 1665

The Garden Route forms quite a large coastal region, with three main centres in George, Port Elizabeth and East London, all with airports.

The southern cape, affectionately known as the Garden Route- has become one of the golfing Mecca's of South Africa, offering a glorious amount of golfing pleasure.

Many of these courses are top class, many of them new ones, stretching from Mossel Bay in the west to Plettenberg Bay in the east.

The Links at Fancourt

A man-made links course, quite possibly the most difficult in South Africa. Be patient and accept that this was never meant to be a low-scoring, target golf course and you will have a unique experience.

Signature Hole: The short par four 14th (309m) stands out. Thread your drive past the fairway bunkers and hit a pitch shot to a green framed by towering dunes. The par four 15th, which swings around a wetland and ends in a peninsula green, is also a phenomenal hole.

Visitors green fees R1100 (hotel residents and member guests)
Cart Fees: only available with medical certificates
Caddies: R160 (compulsory, one caddie per person)
Designer: Gary Player Design Co (Player/Phil Jacobs)
Location: Fancourt Hotel & CC Estate, Southern Cape 044-804 0185

Pezula

Pezula possess one of the great golfing locations on the African Continent. The course is laid out on undulating property overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Rolling fairways and “eyebrow” bunkers a la Glen-eagles give the course Scottish highlands appeal. The terrain makes it difficult to walk the course.

Signature Hole: Although it’s a short par four, the 275 metre 14th has a spectacular location. A strategic golf hole, where a percentage tee shot and approach into the green will reap dividends

Visitors Green fees: Summer – Affiliated R595; Non Affiliated R695
Designer: Ronald Fream/ David Dale
Location: Knysna, Southern Cape 044-302 5300

Oubaai gold resort

This Ernie Els design opened in 2005 near his holiday home at Herolds Bay, and is a very playable layout built on high ground above the ocean. Visitors gather at the new Oubaai Lifestyle Centre, and begin their rounds from the tenth tee, while members have their own private clubhouse over-looking the original Oubaai cove.

Signature Hole: Some tremendous par 3 holes, but the most scenic and spectacular is the 17th, from an elevated tee, played against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean

Visitors green fees: Affiliated R495; Non Affiliated R595, including cart
Designer: Ernie Els
Location: Herolds Bay, Southern Cape 044-851 0131
