Langebaan: Take your best shot
January 6th, 2010
I've never really been into golf - or most sports for that matter. Not for want of trying mind you, but once you get stomped and tripped up on the sports field once too often [ok, all the time], you do kind of give up.
So when my partner and I were offered the chance to visit the Langebaan Country Estate I was a little trepidatious - but Glenn persuaded me otherwise. "Come on Es, be a devil, you never know... there may be an Annika Sorenstam lurking deep inside there somewhere," he said, so I decided to go for it.
And God help me, I'd try to play some golf too!
So come Friday, we did the drive, which is just over 100km from Cape Town on the R27, to the 450ha estate located near the Langebaan Lagoon.

The West Coast National Park is a stone's throw away, so the area is steeped in green living - nature conservation is clearly a priority for the area. It is also a priority for the estate we'd discover the next day, while taking a tour of the grounds. The estate has gone to great pains to safeguard the indigenous and rare vegetation. There is also an abundance of birdlife and a variety of buck species - we were lucky enough to see quite a few springbuck.
On arrival, we were ushered into our four-star suite at the Ellefsen Village. The two-bedroom apartment was spacious and modern with every convenience take care of. It includes a flat screen and bouquet of DSTV channels and even a washing machine and tumble dryer. The kitchen is also fully equipped and there is a built-in braai area on the balcony - sheltered from the infamous wind in the area.

There's a range of accommodation to choose from such as self-catering golf lodges as well as three, two and one-bedroom units, all of which are fully equipped. The lodges are serviced and cleaned daily.
Once settled in, we thought we'd check out what the clubhouse had on offer.
The Horizon restaurant on the top floor has spectacular views and specialises in tailor made menus - being Friday, it was pizza night. Adjoining the restaurant is the Blaze Bar and cocktail lounge, where we settled on a drink while watching the sun set over the green, before heading off into Langebaan itself for dinner.
There's plenty to choose from should you decide to venture into town for a bite to eat, we found The Oyster Catcher a treat - the food was delicious, and very reasonably priced. There is also the Breeze café on the estate, which acts as a halfway house for golfers out on the course, where one can have breakfast and/or lunch or simply stock up on snacks for the day.
Saturday dawned bright and breezy, bringing with it a treatment at the Zest Health and Beauty Spa, located in Ellefsen Village. The spa offers a complete range of treatments - including sports massages, one of its specialities.
It is wise to book though. Our massages were divine, and very welcome! After a refreshing glass of bubbly, we were taken on a tour of the estate.

According the estate's website, the Black Knight Design was charged with turning the estate's course into a high-quality, yet testing layout. The course plays 6 359m from the championship tees, 5 826m to 6 071m from the club- and senior tees, and 5 202m from the ladies tees with an overall course rating of 71. To read about the course itself in more detail - it would be criminal of me to try and explain it myself - click here:
The course is suited to all levels of golfers - and then there's me.
After a scrumptious but light lunch at the Blaze bar, we opted to whack around a few balls on the driving range on the advice of Bob Parry, who runs the golfing side of things. Ok, maybe it was more like me beating club and ball into the ground - continuously. I kept getting told "There's something wrong with your action, but I can't tell what....; swing your hips a bit......no, not like that...it's not a dance competition..."
Need I say more?

But there's plenty to do for those who, like me, struggle a bit. There are tennis courts, a bowling green, swimming pool and of course the spa, bars and eating spots.
One can always drive into town if all else fails. If you're adventurous enough, there's also the local disco down the road, called Flamingos. I got to swing my hips there a bit....but be warned, it's not for the faint at heart. And make sure you can sokkie.....just a bit. Or you can simply hang out at the clubhouse.
All in all, it was a great weekend - fun and relaxing.
PS... Despite being warned to take it easy on the driving range, both of us groaned as we got out of bed on the Sunday to head back to Cape Town - I swear I'll never mock golf injuries again!
