Have you ever experienced that dreaded moment while unpacking your suitcase, where your post-holiday-glow is replaced with panic-induced perspiration as you realize you've forgotten something vital behind in your hotel-room?

I only need to think of my first day of married life. My husband forgot his wedding suit in the walk-in cupboard of our overnight honeymoon suite, complete with white 100% pure silk tie and our marriage certificate in its pocket. I've since become a compulsive triple-checking maniac.

Nonetheless - the housekeeping staff of most hotels are pretty efficient in making sure anything left behind is properly stored until its rightful owner decides to claim it. But what about items that are just too weird or embarrassing to 'fess up to?

Sure, they've seen their fare share of forgotten cellphones, wallets and clothing items but according to our online research, items left behind in hotel rooms range from the macabre to the WTF in stature. Would you go back to claim your forgotten false teeth, arrest warrants, sex toys or nun's habit costume (seriously)? Maybe not.

The list is vast and strange - so we've decided to take a look at the top five things left behind in hotel rooms. If you've encountered anything stranger - feel free to add a comment below.

5) Bag of Marijuana
Coming in at number five has to be the bad old bankie of cannabis. Besides the fact that it's illegal in most places this holidaymaker must have had very little on his mind, well other than taking a slow boat through the room service menu. The hip US hotel, The Opus, where it was found is no stranger to guests with boho tendencies. Staff mused that perhaps the guest had stashed it there for his next trip. However, this forgotten item cannot be claimed as staff swear they flushed it down the toilet.  Immediately.

4) An inflatable sheep
Scottish hotels have been centre stage for some rather unusual finds, including the odd half shotgun with a couple of rounds of ammunition. But imagine this housekeepers surprise when discovering an inflatable sheet amongst the bunched up sheets of the bed she was about to make. Whether a sex toy or simply a mechanism to help you fall asleep, it claims our number four slot for bizarre finds in hotel rooms.

3) Fake limbs
Surprisingly this is one of the most common things left behind by guests according to a leading British hotel group. One would have thought something as vital as your artificial leg, which helps you to get from A to B, would be the first thing you'd pack if not put on. Perhaps these guests were trying to make a statement about the cost of the accommodation, who knows?

2) Horse
While some duty managers have had staff discover the likes of snakes, hamsters and rabbits lurking around vacated hotel suits, how exactly do you get your horse into the room, without alarming the porter or concierge on duty - never mind rationalizing it as a house-trained pet. On second thoughts scratch that last bit but this is what staff at a certain European-based hotel group had to deal with.

1) Baby
Forgetting your pet might be forgivable even if it happens to be a horse but your own toddling flesh and blood? A forgotten baby earns the number one weirdest thing to forget in a hotel room title. In this instance it was a couple with way too much luggage who had to leave in separate taxis - a classic case of "But I thought you had the kid!?!"

Did you ever find the wedding suit?? That's crazy! Especially the horse- how the hell did they get it there? Once, we chose a hotel online like one of the ones on here and my sister left her camera behind with all our holiday pictures for the past month on it! She was devastated but when she rang the desk of the hotel they even remembered her name, and had kept it behind which we thought was excellent.

Hotel rooms

12 years ago I was staying in PE overnight at a well know hotel and discovered a fully loaded R5 machine gun under my bed
Called the manager and then the police
The hotel informed me later on that they knew who the owner was of the R5
One of the premiers body guards had slept in the room the night before
duuuu wonder if he ever missed it?
At the time I did not find it very funny as I was afraid I would be accused of owning the firearm
It all worked out the SAP even gave me a reward of R1000 for handing in the firearm
Never found out what happened after that , nothing for sure
I always check under the bed now its become a habit when staying in a hotel

we had a great stay!

Not so long ago, a couple staying in one of our establishments informed us that the air-conditioning was not working in their room. "Not a problem, we will move you to another room as the technician won't be able to repair it till Monday" was the professional response of our manager. They moved their belongings to the room next door, quite happy with this arrangement. Cleaners were sent in to clean the first room, only to discover that an item had been left behind by the couple. The rather embarrassed cleaner brought the item to reception: A vibrator had been left in the bed....

Needless to say, on check out, the lady did not show her face, and the gentleman was presented with a plastic packet containing the lost and found item; the reception staff tactfully letting him know that he had forgotten something in the first room. Comment in the guest book: 'we thoroughly enjoyed our stay' ... I bet you did!
