Unpacking with Nicky Greenwall

March 14th, 2008
Savvy TV-journo Nicky Greenwall is familiar with many a famous face, both locally and internationally. Thanks to her show, Showbiz Report, she has interviewed the likes of Johnny Depp and Ms Jolie-Pitt to mention a few, but she’s quite modest when it comes to her own local appeal – she’s also got some great ideas on how to turn your birthday into a holiday to remember...
GoTravel24.com: As one of the most popular faces on South African television, does it bother you being recognised while on holiday?
Nicky Greenwall: I don’t really get recognised that much. My beach gear is very different to my “TV” gear so very few people make the connection.
Are you a bush baby, eco adventurer, extreme thrill-seeker, beach bandit, or five-star freak?
I’m a beach bandit – but I don’t mind a bit of five-star luxury once in a while if I can afford it.
Local is lekker when you find yourself in...
Cape Town. I live there. I work there. I holiday there. It’s the only place I feel most myself.
My favourite hangout in the global village is...
Prague. I went there for a shoot last year and I’m really hoping to go back. It’s a beautiful city especially in winter.
Your travel nightmare would have to be...
Los Angeles. The whole city is smoke and mirrors so nothing is what it seems. Plus, it’s such a long trip to get there. The two 12-hour flights mixed with jetlag are enough to give you a nightmare before you’ve even started.
Your dream getaway would see you...
In Greece. I went for the first time last year and I’m going again this year. Skiathos is my favourite as there seems to be less tourists. As much as I love Cape Town – it’s great to have a beach holiday and know there won’t be any wind.
Your idea of travelling in style is...
First Class. I’ve only done it once and it was HEAVEN. It changed the whole experience of travel for me. Unfortunately it’s not something I can do that often.
Are you a walking holiday itinerary or a spontaneous relaxation rebel?
When I’m travelling for pleasure I’m pretty relaxed – but when I travel for work I’m usually very tense. There’s so much to do and when you’re not in your normal surroundings it can be distracting and lonely.
Have you had or made any mile-high club propositions?
No, but my boyfriend was an air-steward years before I met him – so he’s got a few more stories than I do!
Your ideal travel companion is...
My boyfriend, my mom or my best friend, but not all of them at the same time!
You never travel without your...
Passport? I lost it once in New Zealand. It’s a lot scarier than you think.
Tip to make and not break the holiday...
While I do like seeing new places – I tend to take holidays where I can see my friends. People make the trip worth it for me. My best friends from school live all over the place so whenever I can I like to visit them.
What keeps you coming back for more...
The people I love. I would never have been to half the places I’ve been if I didn’t have friends or family there. This year I’ve organised a trip to Greece with my four best friends to celebrate our “soon-to-be-thirty-ness” (I’m still the youngest at 28!) Being with them on holiday is the best present I could ever hope for.
Nicky is in Cannes covering the annual film festival. Check out Channel24 for the latest news.
