Travel and save
June 30th, 2009
Travelling in the off season is cheaper and that booking in advance often gets you a discount. But there are many other tricks that you can employ to save more when you travel around South Africa.
GoTravel24's top ten saving secrets could include a few tips that you might not have considered before, but can actually help you do a whole lot more while on holiday.
1. Wild cards - The Wild Card is a joint initiative by SANParks, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Msinsi Resorts and Reserves, CapeNature and Big Game Parks of Swaziland and offers members unlimited access to all these areas. Valid for a year, the card lets you do so much more as there will be no entrance fees holding you back. Accumulating points, Wild Card holders also get further value for money by qualifying for more discounts.
2. In by 6, out by 8 - Most restaurants feature this special - if you are seated by 6pm and out by 8pm, you qualify for some great deals. From kids eating free to ‘buy one main course, get one free' - these can really help you save money.
3. Student cards - the age old trick of getting a discount because you are a poor student. What most people don't realise is that many, many more places offer student discounts that you would think. Both student and teacher cards are easy enough to apply for and open you up to a world of discounts. Take a look at the discount finder to see what savings you could qualify for.
4. Go all-inclusive - people often shy away from package deals, but they offer incredible value for money. GoTravel24's packages include everything from your flights, to your accommodation, food and car hire. This means you know exactly what you are spending on the basics and can budget accordingly for all those added extras like visiting local attractions or a few cocktails while you watch the sun set.
5. Creative accommodation - staying in a hotel can be costly, so think your accommodation choices through. House swapping is a great way to literally get a ‘home away from home' and it will usually cost you nothing - except a little elbow grease to get it spic and span before you leave. Depending on who you swap with, this could even include cars so that you can all save even more.
6. 24 hour rule - many national parks or attractions have a 24
hour entry rule. This means that you may re-enter as many times as you
want for 24 hours following your ticket purchase. This is particularly
useful when you are visiting game parks as you can return early the
next morning for a quick game drive and not have to pay again.
7. Insurance - when renting a car, it is often the insurance that adds a zero on to the bill. But wait! Before you sign up from air con, GPS navigator AND insurance, double check that your own personal insurance or bank doesn't already cover you. You will be surprised what incredible money savers are hidden in the fine print of your existing polices.
8. Go self-catering - you may have to wash a few dishes, but self-catering accommodation can save you money. Cheaper than a hotel, you also have much more freedom and no set meal times to adhere to. Double check what each place has to offer - so that you don't end up running to Pick ‘n Pay to buy a frying pan - and plan quick, cost-effective meals in advance.
9. Save on souvenirs - going somewhere interesting? You know you will be expected to bring back presents. Avoid the high end shops and take a look at what the locals have to offer. Not only will they be cheaper, but they are also willing to negotiate. Think small beaded accessories that are small and light to pack and make for beautiful and unique gifts that can be given as Christmas decorations.
10. Try before you buy - If you are going on a themed holiday, think about it beforehand so that you are prepared. If it's a hiking holiday, go for a few walks before you leave so that you know what you will need and buy the equipment in advance when you can shop around for the best prices. If you are road tripping, download and print the maps at home so that you don't have to buy them along the way.

Hi. I dare you to name one restaurant in every major city of SA that have this special offer. |
Restuarant and Flight DiscountsSubmitted by brett on Thu, 12/24/2009 - 22:47. |
I live in the USA and many restuarants offer discounts for early dinning and also for dinning on certain nights of the week like buy one get one free or say get 10% off your bill, however such discounts are usually aimed at locals, so usually you would need to get a coupon from the local newspaper or print a coupon from the restuarants website to qualify - So I guess the question is does a tourist really want to use precious sightseeing time to seek out such discounts. |

In by 6, out by 8Submitted by gt24.editor.kelly on Tue, 06/30/2009 - 13:05. |
Hi Anonymous Many restaurants in South Africa do, in fact, have more than one seating, especially in the evenings. The exact times of these seatings vary between restaurants, and according to the season. We recommend that when booking, you enquire about the restaurant’s seating policy and ask if they have any specials for earlier diners. If you plan on a longer stay with drinks after dinner, it might be better to opt for the latest seating possible - avoiding all the earlier family diners! Kelly :) |
