Tiny in his vinyard.

Never did Tiny and Judy Van Niekerk think their dream of owning a prestigious wine farm could become a reality.

In the beginning…

Amongst the rolling hills and farmlands of the KwaZulu-Natal midlands, is the historic Stables Wine Estate. It is thanks to the hard work and determination of Tiny and Judy that the province of KwaZulu-Natal became regarded as a new wine of origin area and in 2006 they achieved the first ever certified KwaZulu-Natal wine of origin.

Let's face it when you think vineyards, you picture the Winelands of the Western Cape. This remarkable wine farm, situated just outside Nottingham Road, has been established on an old stud farm. Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Drakensberg, the estate the pride and joy of its owners and proof that anything's possible.

The birth of the wines…

Open to the public, Stables allows locals and tourists alike to appreciate the process of fine winemaking. Share in the birth of a wine as you walk through the vineyards and pick the grapes with Tiny. You will experience exactly what goes into making a bottle of their distinctive wine - it is lower in alcohol, dry and fruity thanks to being aged lightly in French Oak barrels.

More then just a farm…

The farm hosts annual festivals like the Blues Festival and Grape Crushing after harvest. Also, visitors can enjoy tapas-style picnics made up of a selection of locally produced items from all over the Midlands. Prices vary according to selection.

And the award goes to…

The Stables Wine Estate offers a unique gift or commemorative touch with its personalised wines. Wines can either be selected from the existing range of wines on offer from The Stables, or, if you want to be truly indulgent, a personalised blend can be discussed. Such an example was when the Springboks won the World Cup in 2007, Stables Wine Estate paid tribute to their victory by creating a bottle of wine that was truly proudly South African. It was titled “The time is now” and was a 2005 vintage.

Indulge in the unique offerings of KwaZulu-Natal.
