Durban fun
Take the kids to Durban this school holidays. From as little as R1 249, its a definite steal...

No place on Earth is being as closely watched this week as Zimbabwe. The world is on tenterhooks, eagerly waiting to hear whether Mugabe will be unseated.
GoTravel24.com speaks to Zimbabwe tour operator Brett MacDonald, who appears to be a lone voice of light amidst the doom and gloom of Zimbabwe's disintegrating economy.
In 1999, tourism in Zimbabwe was a thriving cash cow, with a reported 1.4-million tourists visiting the then bustling safari mecca. Mugabe's land reform policy was then implement in 2000, and its effects soon hit - hard. Figures of those visiting the country plummeted by half, the start of steady decline thanks to an environment of mega inflation, a crashing economy, fuel shortages and a serious case of negative publicity.
But like South Africa can Zimbabwe also escape what could be considered the African continents' version of democracy and the reported doom and gloom?
Perception is nine-tenths of the truth
"Zimbabwe is safe and always has been," says tour operator Brett MacDonald, one of the first farmers to fall victim to the land reform policy. He headed to South Africa as a refugee in March 2000 and since then he has been arranging tours between the two countries.
His comparison of safety in the country to be that of an average day in Johannesburg is up for debate, but what stands out most is what he claims is the heart-cry of the Zimbabwean people.
"As a people, Zimbabweans are placid and peaceful. They've had enough of politics and desperately want the situation to improve. "
A view to kill
Many tourists have avoided visiting the country out the fear created by negative perceptions and the moral obligation of not wanting to support Mugabe in any way. With the changing climate many more may want to plum its obvious advantage over Zambia when it comes to viewing world heritage site, the Victoria Falls. "I'd urge people to start visiting as soon as possible," says Brett.
He claims its one of the few places to have an isolated bush experience without being charged an arm and a leg. "In the Kruger you have at least three vans surrounding one leopard hunt. Not only that, at Hwange National Park we'll show you how to really put your 4x4 to the test."
The terrain is diverse as Brett points out. View the big five in total isolation at Whange, or spot them along the shoreline of Lake Kariba, as you enjoy a luxury cruise. Beyond that there's the Eastern Highlands, very similar to those of Scotland, where you can tiger fish to your heart's content or simply wander along the fields of heather.
Get it while the going's good
The stability of the political climate will determine the rate at which investors start moving back. The country has an unemployment rate 80 percent and tourism presents the opportunity of a quick turn-around.
But for entrepreneurs like MacDonald, the opportunity is now. "I had the pleasure of attending a breakfast with Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, and he considers Zimbabwe to be the best place for investment. To get in from the bottom up is the best approach."
"All said and done it can't get any worse when it comes to tourism," speculates Brett. His advice to South Africans wanting to visit the country is "come and learn from our mistakes. Land reform might be moving at a snail's pace in South Africa but it's inevitable. We've been through it and have loads to share, not electricity that is."
South Africans can't deny the trend of visiting Europe and Asia before exploring their own continent, but with the majestic splendour of Victoria Falls, Great Zimbabwe and Lake Kariba on our doorstep, an affordable adventure is just around the corner.

Political unrest everywhere not just in Zim
As a Zimbabwean i return home 2/3 times a year.. I always come back feeling rejuvenated with wonderful memories of fishing on lake kariba.. walks through untouched forests in Nyanga and days spent swimming in beautifully clean water.. there are not many places left like this. I feel that the beauty of a country and the kind nature of the people that live there should not be punished for the polititcal unrest. When you look around the world today there is political unrest everywhere.. so we should support the local people and keep going back. They don't deserve to suffer anymore than they have. There is no doubt that you will have the best trip!
Just back from Vic falls and
Just back from Vic falls and it was great to see the falls in full flow.Great unspoilt African destination. The everyday guy in the street is desperate however, hopefully the election will change this.
Zim
I went to Zim about 3 years ago to Vic Falls and I really enjoyed my time there. The people where friendly and really helpfull even through the doom and gloom. The only problem we had was finding food as we went on a self catering basis. It really became a surviver eposide for us with all of us dreaming of food. It is still the best holiday I ever had and would go back anytime. (I even flew with Air Zimbabwe)
true dat!!
I may be a bit of a referee and a player, being a Zimbabwean, based in South Africa, but, i can agree with all these positive sentiments...
It is a beautiful country, with quite, intelligent and unassuming people, who will welcome you and show you so much kindness...
I was born in one of the most beautiful parts of this country, the Matopo Hills, where Cecil John Rhodes is buried, and i can tell you, from the excited cries of the rock rabbits, to the mysterious rock paintings and the curious rock formations; you will be truly refreshed.
Our hope and prayer is that with our long "winter" hopefully coming to an end, everybody will come together, and give back to this wonderful country all its past splendour and glory...
Thami; Pretoria
@Thami, i was also born near
@Thami, i was also born near the Matopos and went to school at REPS. It is breathtaking country, and i remember our field trips to the Matopos National Park - there is no substitute!
I hope that we can finally be free to raise our lovely country from the ashes.
Thanks for a positive
Thanks for a positive article when everything is so negative these days - I have always encouraged anyone and said to any traveller "visit Zim, it is safe and absolutely beautiful, you will have the most amazing holiday" Many have come back and said just that after visiting Zim and also always add "everyone is so friendly". Being a Zimbabwean living in SA, I will always promote tourism to Zim!!! EB
Interesting article
I've always wanted to visit Zimbabwe, but Mugabe's turned me off it. You're right about the negative perceptions. Reading this article made me think, if Mugabe is ousted, I'll definitely plan a trip to Zim. - Michelle.
Vic Falls
Vic Falls really is awe inspiring. Zim is a must-do for any traveller to, or around Africa. Agree about the sarcasm, anon. The lowest form of wit.
Zimbabwe
Wow! I've always heard of Zim's beautiful scenery. To judge a whole country by it's economy, etc. is a bit stupid. I'd love to go to Zim! Anon, sarcasm is really uncalled for.... We have crime and violence here EVERY day, yet you'd want people to come because it's good for the country. Same way for Zim. Think about that.
this Article
Wow, this article really opened my eyes. . . I hear that Afghanistan is also lovely this time of year . . .
Come now...
...Mr Mugabe, stop surfing the web and leaving annoying comments, and start packing.
Mr Mugabe
I agree - pack up and leave so that the country can be rebuilt!!
Muggerbee
As soon as Mugs is gone I will start packing for a visit to this most beautiful country.
