A yummy snack for under R100. Photos: images24/Die Beeld/Alet Pretorius

So you decided to travel to Pretoria, in search of a memorable, inexpensive holiday. With loads to do, your finances are looking dreary. Try our list of items and activities for under R100.

Feed your face

There are a couple of good joints that can quell those hunger pangs, even on a shoe-string budget. If you in the Hatfield area, pop in at the Vetkoek Maleis. Try the Chicken Surprise, it's fantastic and best of all, the damage is only around R20-R30. The boerewors roll stand in front of News Cafe in Menlyn also has really cheap food. Try the wors with the chili sauce and pay under R20. When the munchie bug hits in the early hours of the morning, there's a 24-hour Woolies at Groenkloof, you'll get a pie combo complete with chips and a drink for just thirty bucks.

Get some culture

Visit the cultural landmark that is the Union Buildings. Not the most riveting activity but it is necessary for your cultural awareness. It's become a great symbol of unity and you don't have to fork out any money.

Next, catch a live performance at the State Theatre, situated on the corner of Pretorius and Prinsloo streets. Some performances can be really expensive but there are some that are under the R100 price range, so check the schedule.

Check out the Transvaal Museum which boasts excellent natural history displays. You can view the australopithecine fossil found at Sterkfontein in the Cradle of Humankind. This is a roaming artifact, so keep in mind that Mrs Ples might be touring somewhere else when you stop in. But the visit is free.

Entertain yourself naturally

Venture the great outdoors with a visit to the Groenkloof Nature Reserve. Walk, mountain bike, or go on a 4x4 drive. You could also choose to view animals such as giraffe, antelope and many others. If viewing birds is more your thing, then make your way to Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary, on the corner of Boshoff and Roper roads because there's no charge. Next is the National Zoological Gardens situated near the city centre. The great thing about this particular zoo is that you can camp within the premises on Friday and Saturday nights. You'll pay R10 secure parking plus R36 entrance fee.

Shop till you drop

Pretoria is known for its many markets. With a shoe-string budget you have to hit Pretoria’s flea markets. Head on down to Pretoria Zoo flea market where everything is hand-made and you can score an item for as cheap as R5. You can get traditional accessories at a steal and if they run out of stock, then a piece can be made for you while you wait.
