Nigel Pierce is considered to be one of SA's bad boys of radio. His outspokenness has gotten him into quite a bit of trouble, but he's managed to avoid this while travelling. We chat to him about holiday hot spots.

GoTravel24.com: As one of SA's popular radio DJ’s, does it bother you being recognised while on holiday?
Nigel Pierce: "I tend to go overseas for holidays, but if I’m in Cape Town for the start of the silly season I don’t have a problem with people coming over to say hello.

Where's the most interesting place your job has taken you to and why?
"China. It’s such an interesting place with such diverse characteristics. We visited there as part of a media delegation to foster relations between China and South Africa. The work ethic amongst the Chinese is palpable. I tried everything on the menu except the sea cucumber.

Are you a bush baby, eco adventurer, extreme thrill-seeker, beach bandit, or five-star freak?
"I am five-star freak. I don’t do four and half stars. Some people believe that you don’t spend your holiday in the room, but you shower and sleep in it and trust me that can lead to arguments if it is sub-standard

Local is lekker when you find yourself in...
"Durban. What a nice little place to pick up bunny chows. Cape Town because it is a top tourist and leisure destination.

My favourite hangout in the global village is...
"Rome. I love that city and its gelatos. It has steeped in history like most European cities, but you can feel the difference between Rome and Paris as an example. The Romans have a little more soul.

Your travel nightmare would have to be...
Being stuck at Charles de Gaulle Airport for nearly four hours on the tar and being told I have to stay at some dodgy hotel for the night as well as losing contact with my wife in the mayhem of having to wait for another visa. I eventually caught up with her at the hotel and got to bed at 04h30 only to be up at 06h00 the next morning.

Your dream getaway would see you...
"In the Maldives because it has top hotels, beaches and is idyllic and peaceful at the best of times

Travelling in style is...

"Damn expensive. Once you have tasted 5* hotels you cannot go back to the youth hostel, three star and four star hotels. 5* by its very nature is expensive. Our holiday last year cost about R100 000.

Are you a walking holiday itinerary or a spontaneous relaxation rebel?
"I like to do both.

Your ideal travel companion is...
"My wife because she understands my idiosyncrasies and weird habits. Anybody else would kill me. She doesn’t think that I’m a creep when I complain about sub-standard food or accommodation because her standards are just as high.

You never travel without your...
"Toothbrush and baby powder for my body.

Tip to make and not break the holiday...
"Learn when to keep quiet and be flexible.

What keeps you coming back for more...
"The coffee, the doughnuts, the gelato, the beer, the food.”
