Koula unpacks

May 21st, 2008
Koula is the feisty chameleon that keeps you on top of what's hot on the airwaves. She loves getting physical on her holidays, but not in the way you're thinking.
Besides her DJ antics she also caught our attention when she decided to do the Comrades Marathon for the first time in 2007 - and she confesses she's now hooked. Gotravel24 chats to her...
Gotravel24.com: What made you decide to participate in the 90km Comrades marathon?
"Koula: "This is the second time I'll be tackling Comrades, actually. I completed my first "down" run last year, after being challenged to run it for charity. And now I'm hooked! And of course, I'll be running to raise money for a very worthy cause again.
Does your holiday itinerary regularly feature physical activities?
"I usually pack my running shoes when I go on holiday. It's really a great way to explore new places - I've run through the streets of Rio, Paris, London and even the Andes mountains.
Find out from the locals where the good running trails are and never run alone in remote places, though. When I'm on holiday, I'll run early in the morning, or early evening but I'm not an exercise-junkie 24/7. Holidays are for relaxing, after all!!
As one of South Africa's popular radio personalities, does it bother you being recognised while on holiday?
"That is the down-side, unfortunately. And there are always people who want to talk "shop". For me to really have a good, restful holiday, I generally have to go overseas.
Are you a bush baby, eco adventurer, extreme thrill-seeker, beach bandit, or five-star freak?
"I suppose it depends on why I'm taking the break. If I need some real time-out, then I love getting lost in nature... being high up in the mountains or near lakes.
If it's a more recreational holiday, it would be near a beach for sure! Luckily I have friends all over the world, so I rarely have to book hotel accommodation. And if I do, I don't mind roughing it. I'm not a 5-star brat!
Local is lekker when you find yourself in...
"Ooooh! So many places... Stellenbosch, Knysna, George...
My favourite hangout in the global village is...
"Villa La Angostura in Argentina. I've been there once but definitely have to go there again soon. It's by far the most exquisite and tranquil place I have ever seen! It's in Argentina's Patagonia region, high up in the Andes, and surrounded by several glacier-fed lakes.
The locals live in log-cabins and there's an awesome ski-centre. I would go for the nature alone, though. It's absolutely breath-taking!
Your travel nightmare would have to be...
"Haha! It actually happened already! A friend and I had different connecting flights from Sao Paolo to Rio de Janeiro. I'd never been to Brazil before but my friend had lived there for a year and was fluent in Portuguese. She assured me that she would meet me at my arrival gate in Rio and there was no need to worry about anything.
Murphy's... both our flights to Rio were delayed. I didn't have international roaming on my phone as I'd intended buying a local SIM card once we'd landed there so neither of us could communicate.
It was about 11:30pm on a Friday and as I walked out of my gate, there was no sign of my friend. I waited another half hour - still nothing. All signage was in Portuguese and none of the airport staff could speak English so I couldn't even find out if her flight had landed yet.
I had visions of having to sleep in the airport and being mugged or having my luggage stolen. It was awful! I didn't even have our accommodation details or any other contact numbers. Eventually we found each other after about an hour and a half. I never, ever want to experience something like that again!!
Your dream getaway would see you...
"Going to Antarctica! That's next on my list of adventures!
Travelling in style is...
"A rip-off sometimes! I've had the opportunity of staying in some amazing places in South Africa, thanks to my job and its perks and I'm totally grateful for the experiences. But being away from home most weekends makes me miss my own home.
It's also not fun staying in incredible hotels when you're all on your own! So when I travel on holidays, I'm really not fussed about a place being stylish. As long as it's clean and free of bugs, the bed is comfy and there's a telly, I'm happy.
Are you a walking holiday itinerary or a spontaneous relaxation rebel?
"Definitely the relaxation rebel. I'm pretty clueless about most of the places I travel to until I get there. That way, I have no expectations so I won't be disappointed. Obviously once I'm there, I'll try to find out and see as many places as possible. But I need chill time. My biggest priority on holiday is usually SLEEP!
Have you had or made any mile-high club propositions?
"Never and nope!!
Your ideal travel companion is...
"A good friend or my mom.
You never travel without your...
"Passport and bank or credit cards!
Tip to make and not break the holiday...
"Avoid stress at all costs! Maybe the photo of the place looked nicer than your actual room is or perhaps the waiter took longer than you were prepared to wait to take your drinks order.
It's a holiday!!
If the situation isn't going to affect your life in five year's time, there's no point in getting worked up about it. Just remember you're there to relax and have a good time. Oh, and an ex-boyfriend of mine once took his PSP with him to our beach holiday in Zanzibar. Bad mistake!! Men, leave your games at home!!
What keeps you coming back for more...
"I'm a hippie at heart so beautiful scenery and nature does it for me!
