The sky apparently is the limit when dining in Johannesburg, thanks to WOW Capital's Dinner in the Sky.

Forbes.com ranked it one of the top ten most unusual restaurants in the world and yes, enjoying drinks or a meal 40- to 50-metres in the open air definitely takes the wow-factor to a higher level.

But the thing foremost on the mind is, “How safe is it?”

The idea originated in Belgium. The restaurant allows 22 guests to be strapped in with four-point seat belts. One rises slowly into the air thanks to a crane weighing 90 to 160 tonnes.

The sensation can be described as the start of a rollercoaster ride at Ratanga or Gold Reef City. Some of the more adventurous may be disappointed that an adrenalin-charging rush is missing when you reach the top, but for the rest of us, a settled stomach is far more appropriate. There certainly is a gasp as the spectacular views unfold around you as the 9- x 5-metre table, with kitchen in the centre, makes a 180° rotation.

Patrons can take heart that all the equipment has to conform to the rigorous safety standards of the German TÜV certification, a stricter and internationally-recognised version of the SABS. Viva German engineering!

Having spent the bulk of summer in Cape Town, The Dinner in the Sky team will be putting down roots at Montecasino in Fourways, Johannesburg.

Things to note:

  • If you’re planning on spending the average R250 a head you’d be wise to make sure all the members in your group have a desire for the unusual and are not scared of heights.
  • “It’s raining...,”okay I’ll stop right there. Sports events are just one of many themes this nouveau restaurant is willing to cater to, but remember it’s all weather dependent.
