Easy escapes

March 16th, 2010
I personally hate admin. Booking trips away can cause a little of it - trying to organise flights, faraway accommodation and all that malarkey from a base in London (back when I lived there) was my absolute worst. Thankfully, in this stunning land of ours, we are indelibly fortunate to not have to wonder that far to escape our urban lives when the need arises.
Next month is April - basically South Africa's month off. You could take a few days leave and flit around the world, or you could see what is right by you. What? You don't know? That's why I am here to help. We've got some ideas for destinations right by South Africa's two biggest cities.
Escape Johannesburg

The Drakensberg is only a few hours away from Johannesburg or Durban and boasts some of the most glorious scenery available in South Africa. Hiking, fishing, fresh air, flora, fauna - it is all there. Escape for this peaceful location on a whim. |

The Pilanesburg is within a 3.5 hour drive of Joburg. The reserve has an amazing range of animals because it sits in both the highveld and lowveld - two different biological zones - and allegedly contains every species of mammal in southern Africa. |
Kruger Park is the country's most famous game reserve, and for good reason. This massive expanse of wildlife includes 1500 lion, nearly 30 000 buffalo and 11 500 elephant (this count was done in 2004). Around 4 hours from Joburg, this can be driven easily in a morning. |
Escape Cape Town
Hermanus has always been a favoured destination for Capetonians. Perched between the stunning coastline and winelands, beauty in this town is all around. As well as being famous for whale spotting, the cliffs, farmers markets and myriad restaurants all add up into one superb, and close, getaway. |
The Cederberg is where the sun paints the sky with the most glorious sunrises. This out-of-the-way range of secretly hidden accommodation spots is perfect for escaping the city buzz for a bit, amongst its famous rock formations. |
Paternoster is one of the last traditional fishing villages remaining. It boasts classic West Coast activities other than fishing such as marine wildlife spotting, hiking, art as well as sea kayaking all in a stunning location about 2 hours outside Cape Town. |
