Cape Town named Tripadvisor's top destination

The world's best known (and most feared) customer-driven traveller advisory site, TripAdvisor has chosen Cape Town as the number one destination of the Top 25 Destinations in the World - as voted in the Tripadvisor 2011 Travelers' Choice Awards.

Chosen by a poll of actual travellers and TripAdvisor users, the annual award recognises the people's choice of destinations from across the planet. After being placed at twenty fifth in 2010, Cape Town has trumped traditional travel cities like Paris, France (placed fourth), London, United Kingdom (eighth) and Rome, Italy (seventh) to take the top spot.

Says Cape Town Tourism, CEO, Mariette du Toit-Helmbold; "We are positioning Cape Town as a challenger brand and one of the world's new and exciting cities. Cape Town tells an authentic story and captures the hearts and imaginations of a world bombarded with choice and homogeneity. The Mother City is iconic, complex and multi-faceted. As much as there is beauty, there is diversity and personality. There is still room for the unexpected and the spontaneous. This award suggests that this is what today's traveller is searching for. We are honoured to have been chosen and endorsed as the top choice by the very people who are most passionate about travel. We look forward to welcoming more Cape Town fans."

Challenger tourism brands were high on Tripadvisor's Top Destination list, with Sydney, Australia (second), Machu Picchu, Peru (third) and Rio de Janiero, Brazil (fifth) all making it into the top five spots travellers voted for.

With over twenty million members and a Facebook following of 96 058, Tripadvisor described Cape Town as "glistening at the southern toe of the African continent."

The locals in CT are not rude or unfriendly. In my experience, the people who complain about that are the ones with the issue - kind of like people whingeing that Parisians are arrogant and rude. They aren't - in fact, if you attempt even a few words in French, they are some of the most engaging and interesting people on the planet.

Moving somewhere and trying to make friends is always tough - its just that in SA, more people move TO Cape Town than vice versa, and CT does have the most sophisticated social scene in the country. Thats it. There is no special rudeness about the locals.

And I am a DA supporter, but stop politicising this - Cape Town has been awesome for centuries.

Having moved here a couple of months ago and now living the dream, I am not surprised that they voted Cape Town Number 1. This city is so divers and offers the traveller an endless list of things to do, to see, to taste and to experience... You got to love this City...

I have to agree with Anonymous. Cape Town is a beautiful place but the locals are reluctant to warm up to strangers. I've been here for a year now and I have not made a single friend. Another colleague of mine has been here for 5 years and no friends yet! Except for the people this could be a wonderful city but if you plan to move here bring your social circle with you.

there is no denying it was well deserved but people be nice to the people who have moved here to make their home here .Look upon us as tourists too,we have invested millions in the Cape,I do mean millions,so how about it be nice.

I fully agree Cape Town is the most beautifull city inthe world,but it has the most unfreindly ,obnoxious,snobbish true locals.I have lived in one of the popular coastal towns in the
area for almst 17 yrs,my God what an unfreindly lot ,they seem to think the Cape belongs to them only.I have made many freinds,mostly people from up country,maybe 2or 3 locally but if it was at all possible for me to go back to Pretoria I would.When I come across a tourist I sing the Capes praises after all it it my country too,if they ask for help directions or anything else I will gladly help.I get thanked & complimented on how nice the Capies are IF ONLY THEY KNEW.
Many of those who left Gauteng to escape the violance all agree given the chance they would go
back.Anyway you can't get any well payed jobs here,also to be treated like shit.

This is a brilliant city, but boosted to the top by the surrounds, the winelands and little towns in easy reach but tucked into mountain valleys.
Having travelled extensively for the last 14 years and now back home in CT, it is entirely right that it is recognised.

Great achievement. Really proud to be a Capetonian. The Cape is truely blessed with such beauty and great weekend getaways all on it's doorstep. Not to say that the rest of SA is not great either, but this award will be viewed by many potential overseas tourists looking to expand their horizons which will inturn benefit the whole tourism industry in SA. Great Stuff.
