Things to do...

UShaka -  fun for the whole family. This marine world is the 5th largest in the world and it incorporates an authentic replication of a 1940’s ship wreck. Tickets are R92 for adults and R62 for children.

Practice that swing. Windsor Park Municipal Golf Course is a great course to play, even for the average golfer. Course fees are R33 during the week and R40 for weekends.

 

Rub shoulders with the who’s who. The excitement of the Vodacom Durban July is bigger than any other event in Africa. 56 000 people are expected to turn up, so get to booking. Entry is R100.

Just try your luck! The Sun Coast Casino is perfect with private gaming rooms and ample food and bar facilities. There are 1 250 slot machines and 50 game tables including Black Jack, Poker and Roulette to mention a few.

Don’t get swamped! Make a day of it at the Mangrove Swamps situated on the North Bank of the Mgeni River. The area is used as a Nature Conservation Centre. You can see the black, white and red mangrove. Entrance is free!

Billy the Bums - for the Basic Up Market Socialites who enjoys American-styled food. You'll also spot the odd member of the Natal Sharks here, sampling one of the more than 50 exotic and classic mixed drinks.

 

 

Tako Zulus on Florida is a great place to enjoy Mexican food and drinks.

 

North Beach offers great food along with sublime beach views at Joe Cools Bar.

  

For a relaxing end to a hectic weekend try Coimbra’s, a Mozambique slash Portuguese restaurant that spills out onto the beach and has live entertainment.

 

You can't enjoy Durban without trying a bunny. You get the real deal from the folks at Blue Lagoon who won 2007 award for best bunny chow.

Bridget McNulty is a novelist. Her debut novel, Strange Nervous Laughter looks at the peculiar ways people behave around love, sex and food, amongst other subjects. The witty story also revolves around the city of Durban itself.

Zakhele Madida is one the country's top kwaito producers, most famous for his work with the singer, L'vovo. When one thinks of kwaito, Jozi is the city that comes to mind. But this Durban- based producer is making sure that Durban has something to offer too.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping is one of Africa's largest super regional retail destinations. From the Barnyard Theatre, cinemas, IMAX, rock climbing wall, artificial waves, a skate-board park and over 30 restaurants - shopping at this mall means a jam-packed day.

In 1986 the original railway workshop for the Durban Station was refurbished and transformed into what is now, The Workshop Shopping Centre

Ho Chi Fresh Market remains the best outlet in the KZN area for fresh Chinese vegetables like garlic stems and bok choy, not to mention such rarities as seaweed, unpeeled tusk-shaped bamboo shoots and very good tofu.

 

You are bound to find lots of edibles at Essenwood Craft Market. There are all things Italian at the Cremelat cheese stand and you shouldn’t miss Lou Lou B’s Guinness beef and mushroom pies.
