Durban fun
Take the kids to Durban this school holidays. From as little as R1 249, its a definite steal...
The panoramic routes leading from George can make for an interesting family day trip, when holidaying along the Garden Route. Hit cruise control along the Seven Passes.
A visual paradise
Just 15km east of George you'll find the Seven Passes route. It took nearly 15 years to build in the 1880s and has now been proclaimed a National Monument.
As the original road between George and Knysna, this route will take you along the diverse terrain which runs between the Kaaimans River and the Wilderness National Park.
This 2½ hour journey crosses major river valleys such as the Swart, Kaaiman, Silver, Touws, Diep, Hoogekraal, Karatara and Goukamma rivers.
Filled with ups and downs
The road constantly zigzags down one valley and across rivers only to descend again. But it's a breathtaking journey.
The indigenous forests are hidden in the depths of ravines. The open plateau provides you with beautiful views. You have the Indian Ocean sea on the one side and the Outeniqua Mountain peaks on the other.
Rewarding detours
There are many small towns such as Karatara and Rheenendal that you can visit en route to get a bite to eat. Prepare for the odd detour along gravel roads though, but it will reward you with a visit to the old Millwood Gold Fields mining town. From here you can cool off with a well-deserved swim along Jubilee Creek.
You can also stop at the Woodville Big Tree where you can have a picnic or a short walk in the indigenous forest. This makes for good and clean family fun.
