You strike a woman

August 7th, 2008
How you spend woman's day, on the 9th of August, is entirely up to you. You can use it as just another free day or you can make it worth while and go out and do something Woman's day-like.
As travel people we favour the latter and we've compiled a list of some the things you might do yourself.
First of all a quick n' dirty history lesson.
Woman's day became what it is because back in 1956 about 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria protesting against a law that required black women to carry those passes.
Today we celebrate this day as really the beginning of a proper fight for women's rights and a reminder of the prejudices and challenges still faced.
Take a run
Show some girl power and participate in the JAG/Total Sports Ladies Race in Stellenbosch. JAG is an organisation started in 2007 by legendary runner Elana Meyer, earning money for charity.
If you can't join in because of lack of practice just go and support anyway.
It's in Stellenbosch so after the even you and friends can go wine tasting and make a celebration of it.
Go on! Celebrate Woman's Day with these unbelievable packages.
Part of the crowd
If you’re not that brave you can head on down to the V&A Waterfront. Not just for shopping, but rather for the Women's Day celebration. It’s an annual event held at the amphitheatre.
Join the crowds and celebrate the achievements of women from all over the world.
Get schooled
Then there's the less rowdy public lecture at the Iziko Museum. In honour of the day the Iziko Slave Lodge will exhibit, "Celebrating Women". The lecture and the exhibition will highlight the roles that women played during apartheid.
Catch it from the 7th to the 9th if you've always wanted to be more accurate in your history.
Go dancing
Then for something really fun how about Cape Town's Largest Belly Dance show. It's all about celebrating the diversity of women with a cast of over 150 belly dancers. They dancers range in age and experience, from beginners to the advanced.
It'll be a fun day out with your girlfriends. Call 021 712 1913 for tickets.
Take a stroll
If you're in Pretoria and not quite sure what to do or you can easily get the Women's Day commemorative statue on Church Street. It was unveiled eight years ago by President Thabo Mbeki.
A bit of French
You can also celebrate in the French style with French composers and Francophone music at Soiree de Francophony. The event will be held at Wits University in Johannesburg.
It’s a celebration of female accomplishment in orchestral conducting and symphonic composition. If you love classic music in anyway, this will be a wonderful treat. Even though it's Women's day celebration, it will be held on the 10th.
More culture
There are more arts and culture centred celebrations in Jozi. Newtown, the city's cultural hub will hold a five day festival from the 6th to the 20th of August. The performances will range from, storytelling, dance, film, photography, poetry and much more.
Catch this five day festival at Newtown Cultural Precinct. Most of the performances are free.
