Pink and oh so cool. Photo: Bryan Porter

When I was first invited to the Pink Loerie festival by a group of friends, my immediate response was, "What?! Knysna has a gay festival?"

My second response was less surprised, "Aaaaaah, this little dorpie's cashing in on the pink buck during the off-season."

So you can imagine that on arrival I treated the whole shebang with a dollop of pessimism. On the morning of the parade I stepped onto Knysna's main street to an incredible sight. Ma, Pa, Oumie, the kids, and the dog were all out early - making sure they got their seats for the big parade.

Stacks of cooler boxes, folding chairs and picnic hampers left standing-room only for the less punctual punters, and everyone was armed with a single, bright pink ostrich feather.

By noon, a parking lot designated as the gathering area for the march was thronged with every colour, shape, size and sequin in the rainbow. It glittered like a drag queen's handbag.

The march itself played out in a spectacular two-hour show - with music, glitter and fanfare. The crowd went absolutely wild, and smiles and cheers were lavished on all participating.

What struck me though, was the sheer diversity of people participating in the parade, and the way in which the entire town came out to support it.

Of course, the festival comprises a series of events, including art exhibitions, parties, shows and cruises. The 2008 Pink Loerie Festival runs from 1 - 4 MayVisit the official site  to find out more, and see a full list of events.
