Spice it up in Durban

February 29th, 2008
If floral quilts, heart-shaped pillows and sweet lovers’ getaways make your palms sweat, you probably need something with more of a bite, something meaty and sexy. And with its sheen and high temperatures, Durban’s just about the sexiest city in the country.
5pm
Arrive in the city around sunset and kick your weekend off with a long, slow sundowner session. Go to Skyy Bar. It is four floors up and you’ll get an incredible view of the city on the top floor. The music is sexy house the whole night. After a few drinks, drag your partner onto the dance floor and work it. You can either dance on the balcony or inside, it’s your choice. Just don’t linger too long – there’s more to follow…
8pm
Go to Morocco for fun. Don’t worry; you’ll still be in Durban but at Fabulous restaurant. It’s an elegant double storey home that has been transformed into a Moroccan themed restaurant. Wash your hands in rose water as you arrive and get assaulted with delicious scents from their perfumed garden. There are even two harems (not those harems!) in which to sit and smoke Hookah pipes.
11pm
After a filling dinner in majestic settings it’s time for gambling. Try your luck at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom. It first takes you in from the outside, interesting, striking architecture before the 924 stunning slot-machines grab you. Just don’t go too wild because it’s easy to lose your mind in a casino, especially one that’s open 24 hours a day.
10am
Saturday morning and the living is easy. Allow yourself a lie-in; start late and fine breakfast dining will still be waiting for you. News Café is a good place to go. Get junky, greasy food and great coffee to rev you up for the rest of the day. If you’re willing to go the whole hog, try their Potato Skins with Bacon and Cheese. It’s immoral.
12pm
Pray for your sins. Visit the beautiful Umgeni Road Temple Complex and enjoy the oldest and largest Hindu temple in the country. It’s been around since 1883 and looking at it you’ll think you’re somewhere in India.
2pm
Nobody likes sharks, unless they are supporting a rugby team. But generally sharks have a bad rep. If you want to know more about them, visit the Natal Sharks Board. Catch the audiovisual presentation on the lives of sharks and if you want you can also witness the dissection of recently-caught sharks. It may not sexy but knowledge definitely is.
4pm
Go play at the beach. It’s waiting for you and this is just about the right time to go splash around. Try Battery Beach. It’s great for swimming and it’s less crowded than North and South Beach. If you and your partner are into surfing, visit Dairy Beach.
7pm
Start your dinner early so you can stay longer. Go to Quarters Brasserie and enjoy a big well-deserved dinner. While you enjoy one of their exclusive Diue Donne wines, sit outside in the courtyard, it’s the best spot in the restaurant. When it comes to food, the chef recommends the Prawn Tails dish. And you’d be wise to get the Lemon and Cardamom Ice Cream for dessert.
10:30pm
Spend your last night out dancing. Take your sweetheart and go crazy at 3-30 Nightclub. This is an unusual spot with lots of unique characters. The trance music is sexy and great for losing yourself. You’ll love the dance floor, the lighting is fantastic.
11am
Before you go home, run down to Durban’s Golden Mile and check out the Mini Town. Here you can see the exact replicas of Durban’s best known buildings and tourist attractions. They’re all scaled down to 1/24 of their actual size.
