Saldanha is named after a Portuguese admiral, Antonio de Saldanha, who, by the way, had never even see the bay!

As South Africa's largest natural bay, it offers a paradise for water sport enthusiasts, while it's sheltered harbour plays an important part in the huge Sishen-Saldanha iron ore project.

It has a huge iron ore quay and is home to a large variety of fishing vessels.

Submitted by samurai jack on Wed, 06/17/2009 - 12:48.

Slipway Restaurant is a lovely place to eat mussels and fish (the best seafood in the whole area) and drink a nice glass of chilled wine. Had an awsome sailing boat ride with my girlfriend (very romantic) .They made us feel like the real tourists we were and we laernt so much about the history of the bay as well.

West Coast stunner!

I was born and bred in Saldanha - have a HUGE passion for the West Coast and I am SO PROUD that you have finally seen its potential!

Saldanha is the perfect mid-way stop for the other attactions in the area - Day trips out to Langebaan Lagoon, Quad biking in St Helena, Fishing with the locals in Paternoster ... So much to do and Saldanha is at the centre of it all!

I LOVE the West Coast and think that even the most hardened city dweller will enjoy the friendly, welcoming nature of its people...
