Little Greece

August 18th, 2008
Mamma Mia! You and your friends may have a fantastic time watching Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan ham it up - and if the scenery hits you then we have Greek getaway alternatives for you.
But you might not have the cash for a quick international. What to do? What to do? How about staging your own Greek getaway, right here in South Africa. Yes, yes, it won't be the real thing, but it's better than nothing, no?
Start with the food
The Fourways restaurant Mythos is not just Greek-great for its food. But for the décor as well. It's no secret
that sometimes people go on about scenery too much when nobody really cares, as long as the food is edible and doesn't cost a whole month's salary.

But the Mythos décor warrants all the fuss. The colours; variations of blue, white and green are exactly what you'd expect from the Mediterranean inspired spot. It doesn't just stop there; there are ornaments and furniture pieces that dramatically take you to Greece.
Take a lover, or whomever. Have some soudsou kakia, gigantes or halva and pretend you're far from Fourways' Corner William Nicol Drive and Leslie Avenue.

Not every one has a Greek mother. We have about 60 000 Greeks in the country so that means there's a sizeable bunch of us left without homemade Greek food. But Piatto in Woodmead goes a long way in solving that problem.
It's all about making meals just as Mamma made them. And its mamma said this and mamma said that all over the place.
In case you're wondering, she said "never change a winning recipe" and she also said, "you never know when (a) guest will tell their friends, who tell their friends, who tell their friends and so on…" So expect great treatment.
The family restaurant meals include moussaka, lamb kleftico and many other traditionally cooked homemade dishes.

How about worshipping?
Hillbrow doesn't regularly feature on most people's travel itineraries. For good reasons too, the Jozi city centre has many great features but it's always a good idea to stay safe.
And while you’re staying safe, check out the Greek Orthodox Church on the corner of Claim and Wolmarans.
It's classic Greek architecture from the outside but not overly so. There are several levels of roofs topped by an unassuming dome.
It's once you’re inside that things take on the dramatic, the roof suddenly appears to be much higher than the outside hints, there's a three-metre high Parthenon shaped altar with green-marbled columns, there are brass jars, and over the top chandeliers. Even if you don't pray, you'll love this church.
Faux Greek island-style
Then of course there's Club Mykonos Resort and Casino on the West Coast.
A whole package of Greek-style; food, architecture, white beaches, yachts and a huge casino, admittedly gambling isn't an exclusive Greek civilisation activity that will have you wish you were richer. The rocky edge the club resort is situated on offers great views of the West Coast that will make it easy for you to forget you're not in the Mediterranean.
