Whether you're a culture vulture or simply keen on learning interesting facts, this list of Jozi's museums will tickle your fancy.
It’s Dynamite!
The AECI Dynamite Factory Museum is located in the 1895 residence of a mining official. You’ll see records of the history of explosives. The emphasis is on their use in the mining industry. Listen to social commentary which sheds light on the world famous figures that helped shape our country.

Adler Museum of Medicine
This was the brainchild of Dr Cyril Adler and was formally inaugurated in 1962. View collections and preservations of all material that illustrates the History of medicine in South Africa.

Learn the history of fashion darling!
Bernberg Fashion Museum is a museum collection of centuries past’s fashion. Now you’ll know why and how clothing has changed and how the fashions of the past influence those of today.

The Hills have eyes…
Constitution Hill is not only the home of the Constitutional Court, but also the site of Johannesburg’s notorious Old Fort Prison Complex. This was commonly known as Number Four, where thousands of ordinary people were brutally punished before the rise of democracy in 1994. Our political activists such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were detained here. This is definitely worth a visit.

Hector Peterson Museum
This museum commemorates the 566 people who died in the student uprising of June 16, 1976. The museum tells the chilling story of Hector Peterson, a 12-year-old boy who was the first person shot dead by police on that day. It’s located near his memorial.

The Evolution of transport
The James Hall museum of Transport is the largest museum of land transport in South Africa. It’s your best bet for a detailed account of SA’s transport.

Madiba Freedom Museum
It’s named after our first democratic president, Nelson Mandela. The museum charts our journey to democracy.

Step into the 1950’s shebeen-like museum and be welcomed by Marabi tunes, a fusion of urban Afro- American jazz.
The exhibits lie bare and showcase the soul of inner city Johannesburg. It will make your trip to Jozi worthwhile.

South African National Museum of Military History
It’s the only museum of its kind in South Africa. It provides an insightful take on the military history expertise in southern Africa. You can see all types of guns, tanks, armoured cars, aircraft and naval hardware. This even includes a one man submarine called the Molch used by the Germans in the Second World War (1939 - 1945)!

Zoology Museum
It’s the only natural history museum in Johannesburg. It displays specimens which are exhibited in finely crafted teak cabinets. This allows you to engage directly with objects up close and personal!
