Cape Town is a world-class city and certainly has a lot to offer. But where do you go if you want to soak up some sun and unwind. With this in mind, I set off exploring, not forgetting the most important part of the mission - finding some good dessert.

Destination unknown…

Driving along the N2 towards the CBD can really stress you out, even on a Sunday. But with a sunny attitude and some good music, we were determined to make the most of our day. We hit De Waal Drive. If you want to view the city's splendour, day or night, then this is the drive to take. You're taken aback by the view but it's better experienced than explained. As you turn off at Kloofnek, the mundane makes way for mega fun.

Main road shuffle

Victoria Road, squashed between Camps Bay beachfront and a row of eateries, bars and shops, is more chaotic than a main road should be. Not to mention parking, which is a nightmare. I suggest parking behind Camps Bay Sports Ground, where car guards will ensure the safety of your vehicle. New restaurants are always opening up along the Atlantic seaboard. The latest edition is the Camps Bay Beach Club. It will immediately entice you with its water wall. The place has a welcoming atmosphere and the food tastes as good as it looks.

Camps Bay is well-known for celeb-spotting and Paranga is the place to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Enjoy a Cape Town sunset with a dash of panache at this open-air restaurant, along with some good food and sundowners - which explains the many satisfied, chilled-out faces I saw dotted along the road.

Dessert in a word - sinful

Ice-cream and the beach go hand-in-hand, which is why you'll spot a crowd heading up the stairs past Rainbow Beachwear - it's the decadent dessert at Sinnfull. This ice-cream parlour's reputation is legendary.  Even though the queue seemed to have no beginning or end, I was determined to complete my mission.  But the line wasn't the only dilemma.

Choosing from a selection of 300 delicious flavours such as Addictions (we kid you not), Heavenly Hash, Cookies and Cream or Turkish delight is no easy task. Eventually after changing my mind more than ten times and tasting lots of different flavours, I was served heaven in a cup - a scoop of wild blueberries and cream doubled up with wild berry sorbet… hhhmmm. This is best enjoyed on the beach as you soak up some sun and put your feet in the ocean.

Family fun

As the day came to an end, the road back didn’t seem as tedious.  I'm sure the ice-cream had something to do with it. Driving back, we decided to head past Sea Point and Green Point. With children playing in the park and families gathering together, it's easy to see why Cape Town is the place to be.

Tell us about your daytrips, we'd love to know about your undiscovered gems.
