It's a no brainer that Capetonians are an arty bunch. This means there's no shortage of art hang outs at any given time of the year. But that doesn't make it any easier for the art lover from out of town. We've compiled a list of some of the most noteworthy galleries in the city.

34 Long

You can find this gallery in an 18th century warehouse. It's a contemporary space that exhibits the most up to date works by top South African and international artists. If works of Takashi Murakami are among your favourites then this place is for you. Upcoming exhibitions include works by Murakami himself and Cobus van Bosch.

Association for Visual Arts

The non-profit AVA hots up to 50 exhibitions per year. That's almost a new exhibition per week. Here you'll find some of the freshest, daring works on the Cape art scene because that's where many young artists make their debut. There're generally about three exhibitions at a time.

Michaelis Galleries

Here you'll find fertile ground for the edgy shows. Exhibitions sometimes include video works by international and local talent. The UCT art students exhibit their undergrad or post-grad works here throughout the year.

João Ferreira Fine Art

South Africa's contemporary artists and collectors crowd this space. The gallery generally hosts art from different mediums and most exhibitions are chosen according to their undeniable individuality. It doesn't matter if you’re a collector or not, you'll enjoy the works.

Johans Borman

You'll love this one if you prefer work by great South African artists like Irma Stern, Gerard Sekoto, George Pemba and Hugo Naude, amongst others. There also some new contemporary artists but it's generally about the masters. Suitable if you're into proven hits.

Art.b

Art.b stands for the Arts Association of Bellville. It’s a community gallery that showcases the works of emerging artists of all cultural backgrounds in the area. This spirited gallery is non-profit and part of the South African National Association of Visual Art.
