Getting up at 7am on a Sunday morning wouldn't always be my first choice, but this Sunday was different. We were off on a hike to see a shipwreck, which had a rather mystical appeal. (well maybe not a hike exactly, more like a walk down Noordhoek beach)
Coco Beans
The group met at Coco Beans around 9am, which is situated in the Red Herring complex on the main Noordhoek Beach road. With panoramic views, great food and company, what’s not to like?
Next door to the restaurant was a Buddhist-themed outdoor garden shop where all sorts of interesting items are for sale. Here you'll find your zen with various decor items, massages and other beauty sessions at reasonable prices.
Aarh me hearties – we’re off
With breakfast complete, we drove down to the main beach area, about 5-minutes drive away. Noordhoek beach was spectacular with its white sands and turquoise sea. It just seemed to go on for miles.
Interesting signs herald the start of your hike to the Kakapo ship wreck. You are warned about safety, not hiking alone and ensuring that all dog-pooh is collected! The next sign warns about sharks - rather scary but this didn’t seem to stop the surfers.

Four-legged fun
Proceeding down the beach I don’t think I have ever seen so many different breed of dogs in one area, what fun. We were continuously greeted by these four-legged friends, including the equestrian kind. There was a group enjoying a vigorous horse ride on the beach, which was delightful to watch.
The Kakapo ship wreck was about an hour’s walk down the beach and a really pleasant one at that! It dates back to the 1900’s. I must admit it isn't all that spectacular but certainly worth the enjoyment of this easy walk.
Legend has it the ship headed straight onto the beach as the skipper thought he had already rounded Cape Point. I would definitely class that as a bad day at the office.
An hour back down the beach and we were starting to think of lunch – the Noordhoek farm stall provided the perfect finish to great day.
How to get there: Coming from Chapman’s Peak, on the Noordhoek side, turn right into Avondrust, then right into beach Rd. There is sufficient parking and you basically walk straight onto the beach and veer left down the beach for roughly an hour.

Want to gallop along the beach and spot the Kakapo wreck, then try one of our Cape Town packages.
