Taming that surf.

Three words to describe Durban? Surf, sun and sand. Its beaches can be ridiculously overcrowded. But with more than 100km of coastline to tame at least your waves won't have human traffic.

With close to 320 days of sunshine a year, sea temperatures along the coast are on par with that of the Mediterranean in summer (24’C). Temperatures seldom fall below 19’C. Guys and girls, we’ve found ourselves a surfer’s haven.

For the surfer’s… the coast of KwaZulu-Natal is every surfer’s dream. The waves raise high up including hollow beach breaks, point breaks and a few reef breaks. For those newbie surfers, Durban beachfront is ideal. You can learn to surf with waves ranging from 0.61m. It’s also great for experienced surfers when the big 3-4m waves hit.

Tame the surf. Water’s warm all year round, so you won't always need a wetsuit. On summery days in winter, you’ll be comfortable hitting the surf in your board shorts.

Hit the perfect waves. Believe it or not but winter boasts the most consistent surf. During May through to August the cold fronts sweep up from the Cape coast. This brings the swells up to 2-3m. Under these conditions all the point breaks along the  the Golden Mile, also commonly known as ‘The Mile’. This stretch is well-renowned among travellers who enjoy the sun and swimming in the Indian Ocean.

Don’t miss out!

It runs until 20 April and offers 3 000 valuable WQS points for the winner, as well as a total prize of R1-million.  The main venue for the event is New Pier on the Golden Mile of Surf City, Durban.
