Here I go!

Work life getting the best of you, so much so that youre considering jumping off a building? Well go ahead and do it, with our help you'll live to tell the tale. Pretoria might be the administrative capital of South Africa, and who doesn't get a bit suicidal when it comes to admin, but its also a launch pad for a number of adventure activities. Try this guide, admittedly there are risks, but thats why you’ll love it!

Rap Gliding

Standing at the edge of a building can have a totally different feeling to standing at the edge of an outdoor bungy jump. City buildings are not the environment you’d normally associate with an adrenalin plunge, in fact, it often means dire circumstances. Pick a skyscraper, in either Jozi or Pretoria and take on this controlled challenge called rap gliding. Remember, some buildings are at least 95 metres high!

Magaliesburg Canopy Tours

Finally, trekking across the Magaliesberg mountain range needn’t be an arduous task. Eleven carefully constructed landing points or canopies allow you to slide among the rock faces. Some of the cable stretches are as long as 140 metres and 35m above the stream below. And it’s just 45 minutes outside Pretoria.

Haartebeespoortdam Cableway

Don’t expect the modern luxury of Cape Town’s cableway. But what the Haartebeespoortdam journey lacks in comfort, it makes up for in beautiful views along Africa’s longest mono-cableway. It’s a bit of a disappointment that you’re not able to take your own picnic along, blame the location’s resident restaurant I guess. In close proximity, you’ll have access to various watersports on the dam. Or you could try a hot air balloon ride, no limitations on food here.

Inland Diving Tours

If you’ve wandered around Gauteng a bit annoyed by the eyesores created by the lucrative gold bullion, you’re not alone. Finally the abandoned heaps of rubble have something useful to offer as adventure junkies have stopped judging the dump by its quarry. The most unusual is the opportunity to do some deep dive training in one that has filled up with water. You can find it less than 45-minutes outside Sandton City. There are also trails available for 4x4s, quads and mountain bikes.

Cable Watersking

Tenacity surely is needed when waterskiing behind a powerful speed boat, not to mention a solid bank balance to keep your adrenalin aspirations afloat. Should you be a little short in either department then cable waterskiing may be your adventure lifeline. Motorised cables, erected around the banks of dams, pull the skier at an estimated 58kph. Who needs a fancy boat! Head off to Midrand’s Base 3 to try out their 800m-long cable of fun.

Caving

Prepare to get low down and dirty with this adventure. Sure you’ll have some helmets with a headlight to guide you but that’s as far as the pampering goes. Explore the ancient rock formations of the Sterkfontein caves at the Cradle of Humankind, less than an hour outside Pretoria, during this half-day underground journey.

Quad Safaris

While you’re there, you may want to try a quad game drive in Danielsrust. It boasts 550 head of game.  You’ll be accompanied by a tour guide and the pace is relaxed to allow you to fully take in your surroundings. Keep in mind, while mock racing with the animals might seem like an exciting idea, it’s not allowed.

White Water Kayaking

With this adventure you’ll get to try out an Eskimo roll. No we’re not talking about the latest type of sushi. It’s one of the safety manoeuvres you’ll learn during two wet and wild days of paddling along the Highveld’s Crocodile River.

4x4 tours

Are you ready to break in your crossbar? There aren’t many 4x4 trails to choose from in the purple city’s immediate surroundings. But there are some great ones in close proximity, such as the eco trail just outside Parys. Escape for the weekend and drive across diverse terrain which includes everything from flat savannahs, bushveld and challenging mountain stretches.

Power Paragliding

Paragliders who don’t have the luxury of jumping from a mountain can head off to The Dunnottar Winch Park just outside Pretoria. Jumping off a winch, a stationary motor-driven or hand-powered machine used for hoisting, has its benefits – you still get to experience the thrill of flying and if the wind changes direction you just turn the winch. Try doing that with a mountain!
