Living it up like it’s golden!
July 21st, 2008
Visit the world's first museum dedicated to the history of African gold. It's unique and in our very own country!
I’m talking about the Gold of Africa museum which is housed in a restored landmark building, the Martin Melck House. Step into a museum complex that’s literally filled with gold.
In the museum’s centre is one of the largest collections of African gold artefacts displays. It’s named the Barbier Mueller collection.
Head for the workshop! Here you’ll see innovative gold designs being worked on. The designs are inspired by the museum’s collection.

More visual stimulation
Check out audio-visual presentations on gold’s history in the presentation suite. For memorabilia, hit the museum shop. Here you’ll find an exclusive range of merchandise on offer. These include modern and traditional gold and jewellery. They’re set in 18 and 22 carat gold. Now that’s serious bling-bling!
According to Christopher Till, museum director, the aim of the Gold of Africa Museum is to present the gold treasures of Africa. It also showcases the artistry of ancient African civilizations as well as the ritual and power
of African gold.
Relax at the museum’s other facilities such as the Courtyard Garden and Wine Cellar. This cellar is a coffee shop by day and a restaurant by night. The museum also has a venue-hire facility.
Experience the museum’s GOLD restaurant. Start your evening with the welcome of a djembe drumbeat. Join in on the interactive drum circle. Here you can join in and learn to play the djembe drum!
Look forward to traditional African and Malay cuisine. These include Mozambican peri- peri shrimps, Malay-style kebabs with dhal dip and traditional Xhosa pap and spinach! An average meal will set you back R220 p/p.
