Durban fun
Take the kids to Durban this school holidays. From as little as R1 249, its a definite steal...

Road trips could mean risking the friendship when travelling together - but its undeniably adventurous. If you're going to do one, the Jo'burg to Cape Town, via the N1-N9 route, is chief.
The trip will be memorable, that much is for sure.
First things first. There's nothing more enjoyable than driving in the Karoo, road trip wise. The small town of Colesberg offers a range of boredom elixirs: all manner of water activities at the Garief Dam, the apparently magical Colekop and museum excursions.
Then there's an opportunity to do a farm stay in the nearby Noupoort. Rooiport Game Farm is just one of the farms on the route you can play at. Play as in view game and birds, hike or ride your 4x4 if you somehow happen to have that somewhere.
Then there's an opportunity to do a farm stay in the nearby Noupoort. Rooiport Game Farm (available on farmstays.co.za) is just one of the farms en route for you to play at. Play as in view game and birds, hike or ride your 4x4 its full capacity.
Graaff-Reinet is also one of the many interesting places you'll stumble upon on this great drive. It's the fourth oldest town in the country and most of its 19th century character is still intact. So it's like stepping into another world.
If you’re interested in the specifics, there's the Cambedoo National Park where you can fish for trout (and throw right back into the water of course) and ride horses. The Valley of Desolation is an anomaly, a weird oasis in the middle of bone-dry surroundings. And home of the Owl House, Nieu Bethesda is a must see.
One of the more appealing stops on your road trip would definitely be Grahamstown. There's the off-beat Salem settler-village, nothing to do with the witches or that hourglass featuring soap opera. And the Grahamstown Arts Studio can't be missed.
When you get to the Garden Route; have oysters in Knysna, eyeball the Outeniqua Mountains in George, beach about in Mossel Bay, marvel at ostriches in Outdshoorn or even just enjoy the forests.
Fun at the stop-overs is guaranteed but what about in the car while you're getting from one place to the next? Another side of the adventure not to be overlooked to ensure your friendships survive.
It takes a little planning to get it right:
- Make sure you know exactly how long you want to spend travelling. This way everyone's clear and nobody forces the other to move on while there are still the Plett wetlands to see.
- The great Jo'Burg to Cape Town via the N9 is long and offers many attractions. The snippets provided here are not even close to what's readily available. Make sure everyone is clued up and decided what stops you’d like to make, just so there won't be any fights en route.
- This trip can take anything up to 15 days. Make sure you plan your diet well. Gobble up those once in a while fruits you find at the garage store. Scurvy is not a good look.
-Music problems should be saved by well-thought-out mixes.
- And the itinerary is not king.
