School holiday fun

The June school holiday break is upon us and that spells time with the family. We've got you covered with loads of family-friendly activities across the country.
 
Cape Town’s got it going on!
 
Iziko Planetarium’s holiday programme is out of this world. The Paper Theatre Workshop for children will see your kids can making their own colourful toy theatre!
 
Catch it on 3, 8 and 10 July from 10:00-12:15. Damage for your kids is R20. Purchase your tickets from the main entrance of the Iziko South African Museum, which is open daily from 10:00-17:00.

Your kids can also enjoy their very own 'night at the museum with Amazing Treasure Hunts on 1, 8 and 15 July from 18:15 - 20:30 - caters for all ages. Arm yourself with torches, keen minds and a sense of adventure; you will seek hidden treasure amidst the Museums’ fascinating displays. The fee’s only R25.

Dance with my father…or mother! Angelique Joseph's Dance with Me’s will teach you an array of dances including the usual suspects such as Latin, ballroom. They also cater for freestyle, hip hop, belly dancing and line dancing for all levels and ages! It’s situated at Lemontree Shopping Centre, in Swartkoppies and Heidelberg Rd, Alberton. Durban’s children’s activities…
Come alive at Durban's beachfront during July with the Beach Africa Festival. Enjoy week-long international surfing competitions, live events, evening music concerts on the beach and stalls selling clothing, food and beverages. It's the perfect opportunity for your aspiring young surfers to learn how to 'catch and ride a wave'. Contact: 031 304 4934

Crocworld’s not only about crocodiles – although you could witness 10 000 at any given time. You can also see 200 varieties of birds, which are attracted to the indigenous trees and plants.

The park’s home to a magnificent Fish Eagle called Isis who lives in a walk-through raptor cage. Meet Henry, the oldest and heaviest crocodile known to be in captivity.

Have fun with waterfalls, Flamingoes, a Snake Tunnel and a Fresh Water Aquarium. The park is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00. Situated at Scott burgh, it's only a 30-minute drive from central Durban.

Pretoria’s got you covered!

The Transvaal Museum is one of South Africa’s best and oldest natural history museums Enjoy wonderful interactive displays, a designed walk through the story of evolution, and a monstrous dinosaur skeleton outside. Wonderboom Nature Reserve
 
Situated north of Pretoria in the Magaliesberg mountains, the Wonderboom Nature Reserve is a peaceful 200-hectare reserve. Its gigantic wonderboom fig tree is over 1 000 years old. Legend has it that it grew this big because the chief of an indigenous tribe lies buried beneath its roots. Tel: 012 543 0918
