Taking the leap of faith

If any young South African with a taste for adventure was asked to list the top 10 things they'd like to do before they die, bungy jumping off the Bloukrans River Bridge would definitely be somewhere near the top.

Situated on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, the bungy jump at Bloukrans is listed as the world's highest commercial bungy jump. At a whopping 216m high, it's enough to send the adrenalin pumping in even the most intrepid adventurer.

But what exactly makes otherwise perfectly sane individuals want to tie an elastic band around their legs and jump off Africa's largest bridge, only to plunge headfirst towards a river that looks like trickle, and then have their bodies bounced up and down until they finally come to a natural stop?

We chatted to Braden Tuohey from Face Adrenalin, the operators of the Bloukrans bungy to find out:

Do you have to be insane to jump off a bridge? Yes, so it's better to use a bungy cord!

So why do people do it? For the rush of adrenalin, for the t-shirt, for the stigma, for erectile dysfunction... to name a few!

When you're standing on the platform, what do you see below you?
Your feet, an abyss, followed by a cool mountain stream. It’s actually a fully fledged river, it just looks like a trickle from 216 metres up!

What do you feel after you step off the platform?
Your groin, a lump in your throat, free like an eagle... actually, at first, you “feel” nothing, you "see" the ground rushing towards you, you "hear" the wind rushing past your ear, you start to wonder why on earth you decided to do this and then, a gentle pull on your ankles reminds you that you are in fact on the end of a bungy cord and LOVING life! Most agree, this is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

What's the scariest part of the jump? Telling your mother!

Is there a weight limit? What was the weight of the biggest person to ever jump at Bloukrans? Generally we limit the max weight to 150kg, but purely for anatomical reasons (i.e. comfort.) The biggest person so far was 167kgs, 19 years of age, from the USA, and I'm not allowed to tell you her name.

...And the oldest person? Mr Mohr Keet from George at 93 years young.

Approximately how many people have bungy jumped at Bloukrans?
Mmm, hard one! We’ve lost count but at a guess, I’d say 100 000, give or take a few.

Everybody says it's safe, but has anyone ever been seriously hurt or died while bungy jumping? Not with us, we have a 100% safety record.

Can bungy jumping cure a fear of heights? No, but it can help to rationalise the fear and teach you not to let fear stop you from what it is in life you wish to do. Fear is temporary, regret is forever.
