Once upon a time only singers could sing, actors could be famous and publishers could publish. Bring on the internet, and all that changes. Thanks to YouTube, we have Justin Beiber, thanks to reality TV we have Big Brother "stars" and now in the latest twist you can design your own fabulous coffee table book filled with, you guessed it, your very own photos.
One of the latest trends in photography is the ability for costumers to design their very own sleek and sexy photo books, and have the photography company develop the designs into a publication of the highest quality. Now your swimsuit too can grace the cover of a glossy!
It is really quite simple. First things first, identify a vendor. We recommend coffeetablebooks.co.za and ormsdirect.co.za. Next download the very easy to use Microsoft-Paint-like software and get cracking. Don't be intimidated; the only difference between the software that professionals use and the downloadable software that these companies offer is its user friendliness. It simplifies the state of the art and even warns you when pictures run the risk of pixilation. So why sukkel with ladi-di-da InDesign when you simply upload the photos, drag them to where you want them, add a few colourful bells and whistles, and voila! An elementary but stylish collection of your memories is ready to place on your coffee table to brag with.
Although it is certainly (a lot) more pricey than it is to just upload your photos on Facebook, these won't be fading into the netherworld of cyberspace if it's beautiful to present pages remain a sophisticated conversation starter.
But be prepared, you're looking at about R700 for a 30 page A4 book, that includes a personalized hardcover. With canvasses and custom calendars available too, the days of print photography seems far from dead.

Great Idea pity things in SA are always so far behind and so expensive , I am in Europe and have been creating these books of my travels for the last 4 years or so , the price of them here for the same amoutn of pages listed in the article will cost about R350 so R700 seems a little high. |

The SA one-off book print service are a plain rip-off. I can order a photo book, laid out using their very nice software, about 23x32cm, dust cover, 60 pages, premium paper, LANDED COST R700. I stopped looking at local services long ago. Simply too expensive. Go Blurb, Lulu.com, or Createspace, especially the latter if you're not too worried about high quality gloss... I can land an slight smaller than A4 full colour 50 pages here for around R50, doing that for year end presents. |
