Two hyenas are on the loose in Ulundi, Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife said on Wednesday.
Spokesman, Musa Mntambo, stated: ""Last night, we went to view the tracks of the 'lion' where it was spotted. Lion and hyena tracks are almost the same, it's just that the lion's are a bit bigger." The tracks turned out to be those of a hyena.
The culprits made their appearance soon after when rangers played the sounds of a lion eating. This would normally attract other lions, but in this case worked well to draw the scavengers instead.
They attempted to eat the bait produced by the rangers, but "unfortunately disappeared through the bushes when they realised that they were being lured," Mntambo said.
He added that hyenas were shy and cowardly animals which would not normally attack humans, and that serious attempts would be made to catch them on Wednesday night.
