New hope for George cableway

The future of the Garden Route Cableway - which will be the longest and highest in Africa - is looking bright once more, Die Burger reports.

The project came to a standstill two years ago when facilitator, Claude Pretorius (85) died and the foreign investors withdrew due to the global recession.

Irene Vermeulen, one of the directors of the Outeniqua cableway project said a new company, Garden Route Cableway, and its directors, Pierre Poolman and Alwyn van Rensburg, have revived the dream.

The project is in its planning stages and various route alternatives are being investigated.

The cableway is set to stretch from the foot of the Outeniqua mountain to the top of Cradock Peak. The distance is expected to be 1 573 m high, about 500 m higher than Table Mountain's cableway.

Vermeulen said that potential investors have been approached and that they are currently waiting for quotes from companies to construct stations along the route.

They are also looking at the integration of the cableway and the current railway as part of a plan to make George a more attractive tourist destination.

The Heart of the Garden Route

I live in George and have an apartment in Knysna at the Waterfront. This allows me to have the best of the Garden route. In George I have a spectacular views of the beautiful Outeniqua mountains and in Knysna a scenic view of the lagoon and convenience of the retaurants.
There has to be a concerted effort to get the Choo Tjoe working again to boost tourism along the route from Mossel Bay to Knysna. With the proposed cable car to Craddock peak this will be an added attraction to what is surely the closest that one will come to paradise on earth.
