Snapshot - Stellenbosch

June 17th, 2008
Stellenbosch is at the heart of South Africa's wine industry and with 106 cellars it is arguably one of South Africa's most famous wine-producing regions. Consider this 5-minute city guide as your vineyard passport to cool...
Must sleep at: Protea Hotel Stellenbosch
This luscious hotel is situated in the second-oldest town in South Africa. Nestled between two international golf courses, this 180-bedroom hotel offers guests the best of the Winelands.
Whether it’s the magnificent backdrop of mountain ranges you seek, perhaps just a scenic drive or wine tasting at the many surrounding wine farms, you will never run out of things to see and do.

Must eat at: Mamma Roma Restaurant - Stellenbosch
Having established its name in the southern suburbs with stores in Newlands and Steenberg, Mamma Roma has spread its wings with the opening of a third establishment in the prestigious Stellenbosch Square on the R44.
With plenty of parking and glorious views the location is excellent and whether you want a leisurely lunch or an al fresco dinner for two, Mamma Roma has all the right ingredients to make your meal a memorable one.
The menu is substantial with a good selection of pasta sauces, house specialties and plenty of seafood.
Starter recommendations include the grilled Calamari, deep-fried Camembert and the Carpaccio - take your pick from meat, fish or game. Popular pasta choices are the Pescatore - mixed seafood in a tomato or olive oil and garlic sauce, and the Italian Sausage in Arrabiata Sauce.
Both the Rack of Lamb and the Baby Beef are recommended house specialties, as is the Fritto Misto combination of Kingklip, Calamari and Prawns.
The average price ranges from R80. 00 – R110.00 per person
